Newcastle United will monitor Paris St Germain defender Mamadou Sakho’s situation during January's transfer window.
Newcastle United are in the market for a centre-back when the transfer window opens for business in the New Year and are currently assessing all their defensive options.
Boss Alan Pardew has been keeping his cards close to his chest when it comes to transfer targets. But sources in France have indicated United have been keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old’s situation with the French international thought to be unhappy with the lack of first-team assurances.
Sakho has been a long-term target of the Magpies in the last 12 months and his progress in recent games has been carefully checked.
He is thought to have told former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti that he wants more opportunities with Brazilian centre-back Alex and Thiago Silva first choice at PSG.
However, Alex’s recent thigh injury has resulted in Sakho winning his place back.
And while Sakho had been offered to clubs by his representatives, a list that is thought to included Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal, Lille and AC Milan, he must wait to see how Alex recovers from injury.
PSG are now on a winter break until January 13 and they will assess the situation over the festive period. Sakho had been told he could leave PSG in the summer but wanted to stay and fight for his place.
He has made 14 appearances this season and played in PSG’s last two matches, victories over Brest and Lyon.
And despite the player’s willingness to leave the club he has been at since the age of six when he joined the club’s Academy, Ancelotti – who has been linked with an end of season move to Real Madrid to replace under-fire Jose Mourhino – is fighting to retain the classy centre-half.
He said: “He can’t understand my decision to leave him out but that is logical.
“He is not in a position to leave. He will stay because he is an important player.”
If the ex-AC Milan boss gets his way it could see the deal revisited during the summer window.

AC Milan have had their loan offer for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore turned down as they hold no interest in loaning out the Argentine international.
Nigel De Jong suffered a possible season ending injury in the 4 - 2 win over Torino at the weekend. The Dutch international ruptured his left achilles and could be ruled out for the rest of the season.
The Rossoneri could now be forced to find a replacement for De Jong in January as Kevin-Prince Boateng is under performing and Milan have a lack of depth as it stands already.
According to today’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, after a meeting between Ancelotti and PSG's President, Milan received a negative answer regarding the option to loan the 23-year-old international attacking midfielder. It appears that now the 23 year old dubbed El Flaco is no longer an option and Milan will look elsewhere.
Gazzetta also claims that Milan are thinking about Kevin Strootman as a replacement for De Jong. Milan have been scouting him for a long time and could make a move for him this January – though his agent claims he’s never heard from Milan: “I’ve not had contact with Galliani or with Milan or with any Serie A club,” Chiel Dekker said. “In Italy they continue to write of team’s interest but in reality there’s nothing.”
Milan were linked with Daniele De Rossi yesterday but Adriano Galliani says it is certainly not an option and did his regular talking of ‘we are fine as we are’, claiming no midfielders will come or go in January.
“De Rossi and Sissoko? No, we’ll remain as we are. De Rossi is impossible. We’ll keep our midfielders, and De Jong will be replaced by one of our own players,” Galliani said. “I swear that El Shaarawy will stay at Milan. I have already asked Berlusconi to come to Milanello on Saturday ahead of Pescara game.”
