Transfer News: Tottenham & Newcastle Battle For Van Wolfswinkel

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to do battle with Newcastle for Sporting Lisbon and Dutch international striker Ricky Van Wolfswinkel.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is said to be keen on adding at least one player to his squad before the close of the window next week, and a deal for Van Wolfswinkel is on the cards with Sporting in desperate need of the cash.

But Tottenham will not have a clear path to the striker, with the player’s agent confirming Newcastle are also keen, while Norwich have also been speculated to be considering a bid.

‘I know Newcastle are interested,’ said agent Louis Laros.

‘I will not mention clubs because it is a private matter, but I can say that in England there is great interest in Ricky.’

It’s thought that Sporting, who are currently in the midst of a cash crisis, would consider selling the Dutchman for a fee of around £10million, but would also consider a money-plus-player deal with their squad currently thin on the ground.

Newcastle were rumoured to have failed with an £8million bid last week, but Tottenham are expected to go in with a similar amount when talks open early next week.

Van Wolfswinkel is contracted to Sporting until 2016 and thus far this season he has made 26 appearances in all competitions scoring 11 goals.
