Transfer News: Napoli Target Move For Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen

Serie A runners-up Napoli are targeting a move for Arsenal captain and Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen who has had restricted playing time from the bench towards the end of the season for the Gunners.

In the last two seasons, Arsenal have lost both of their captains with Robin Van Persie leaving last season and Cesc Fabregas leaving the season before. Vermaelen could follow in their footsteps out the door at Emirates stadium as well.

After ending the season with poor form and a host of games from the bench, the Belgian international doesn't want to give up his starting place in the national team alongside Vincent Kompany for the upcoming world cup. But with hot competition in the form of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, Vermaelen could be risking his place if he continues at Arsenal.

Napoli could step in and provide Vermaelen a way out with a familar face in Rafa Benitez most likely at the helm in Naples next season.
